In July 2019, more than 45,000 Scouts from 169 countries gathered for the 24th World Scout Jamboree held in West Virginia. Over the course of 12 days, attendees camped and adventure across the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve experiencing troop teambuilding, educational workshops, campfire gatherings and more.
AMERX Health Care had the privilege of partnering with Dr. Bruce Blank, a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), to help keep attendees healthy during this event. Blank volunteered with Charlie Medical and Tessie King RN, the facility’s Chief Nursing Officer. Charlie Medical was one of six medical units on the jamboree grounds. The unit’s medical professionals were equipped to treat attendees that become sick or injured during the strenuous outdoor activities. AMERX provided the unit with wound care products like AMERIGEL Hydrogel Wound Dressing, AMERIGEL Saline Wound Wash, and AMERX Bordered Gauze Dressings.
“The products are amazing,” King said about the AMERX products that were used on patients during the Jamboree. “We used almost everything and watched one severe ulcer on a shin go from a deep, dirty crater with cellulitis to one that is healing well and vastly improved in just six days!”
Dr. Blank, an Eagle Scout, was able to volunteer his medical expertise at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree as well as the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. Aside from working at the MASH-like medical unit, Blank united his passion for podiatric medicine with his passion for Scouting by educating the Scouts about Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He took the opportunity to create the first-ever World Jamboree Podiatric Medicine Exhibit this year where he and other DPM volunteers introduced Scouts to the possibilities of a career in podiatry.
Blank and 19 of his colleagues taught participating Scouts about the kinds of conditions podiatrists treat and the different devices with which they work every day. Scouts even got the chance to get hands-on experience with an introduction to suturing! Participants received a Podiatric Medicine Patch, designed specifically for the 2019 event when they completed the educational activities provided at the exhibit.
The AMERX team is proud to have supported Dr. Blank, Nurse Tessie King, and all of the other doctors, nurses, and assistants. We thank you for being a part of this worldwide gathering that promotes friendship, encourages mutual understanding, and teaches life skills to tomorrow’s leaders.
